Screens With a Shape Around Them
Deciding when and where screens happen is easier to hold than deciding how long.
A rule about minutes is hard to keep and easy to argue about. A rule about when and where is much easier: not during meals, not in bed, and the phone stays in the drawing room.
Watching together changes what a screen does. Ask what is happening, pause it, say what you noticed. That turns watching into talking.
Give a warning before it ends — "two more minutes, then we switch it off" — so the ending is not a surprise. Have something ready for afterwards, because the difficult part is usually the empty moment that follows.
Most families have days when the phone does more childcare than they intended. That is a day, not a pattern.
