Learning That Looks Like Playing
Sorting, stacking, pouring and pretending are how young children work things out.
A child sorting buttons into two bowls is doing early maths. A child pouring water between two glasses is finding out about volume. A child feeding a doll and telling it off is practising language and how people behave with each other.
None of this needs bought toys. Steel katoris, old bangles, a bucket of water on the balcony, cardboard boxes and a dupatta will keep a small child busy and thinking for a long time.
Join in sometimes, but let them lead. When you follow their game instead of directing it, they keep going for longer.
Boredom is not a problem to be solved immediately. The few minutes of nothing-to-do are often when something gets invented.
