Getting Ready for Big School
Being ready for school is mostly about small everyday independence, not about reading early.
Families often ask what a child needs to know before school starts. In practice, the things that help most on the first morning are practical ones: opening their own tiffin, telling somebody they need the toilet, carrying their own bag, saying their own name clearly.
You can practise all of these at home, without it feeling like practice. Let them pack their own bag the night before. Let them open the tiffin box themselves at lunch, even when it takes a while.
Talk about school as a place with new friends and a teacher who will help, rather than as a test that is coming.
Children arrive at school knowing very different things, and a good classroom expects exactly that. Yours will find their feet.
