Listening So They Keep Talking

The way you answer decides how much your child tells you next time.

When your child tells you something, stop what you are doing for a moment and look at them. That pause is most of it.

Give them time to find their words. A silence of a few seconds feels long to an adult and is exactly what a young child needs. Finishing their sentence for them teaches them to wait for you to do it.

Instead of "how was school?", which usually gets "fine", try something small and specific: what made you laugh today, who did you sit next to, what was the best thing you ate.

If your child speaks little, or speaks a great deal but is hard to follow, keep talking with them warmly and unhurriedly. If it is on your mind, it is always reasonable to ask someone qualified rather than to keep wondering.
