Encouraging independence 2 min read

Letting Them Do It Themselves

It is slower at first, and that is the whole cost of it.

Putting on their own chappals takes four minutes when you could do it in twenty seconds. Those four minutes are the lesson.

Start where the stakes are low and there is no hurry: pouring their own water from a small jug, carrying their plate to the sink, choosing between two shirts, packing their own bag.

Expect mess. A spilt glass is part of learning to pour, not a reason to take the jug back.

Build in the extra minutes rather than trying to find them on a rushed morning. Independence practised when everyone is calm is what shows up when everyone is not.
